Cate Recommends: “Send Her My Love” by Journey

I know, I know, you probably already have a built in reaction when you hear the name Journey. Either you sigh and drift off to a cozy classic rock place in your heart or you roll your eyes. I do a bit of both, depending on the song. If it’s something that turns into a bit of a sing-along, my eyes are stuck on the ceiling, but if it’s a song buried on one of their older albums then I probably secretly love it.

Why a song like “Send Her My Love” isn’t better known is a mystery to me. It’s one of the earliest power ballads (lost in the shadow of “Faithfully”) and I’ve always thought it was an example of Steve Perry at his very best. Ya know, emotionally gutted and clearly living in an actual moment of his own life. The band quietly rocks the hell out of this and the lyrics?

“It’s been so longSince I’ve seen her faceYou say she’s doin’ fineI still recallA sad cafeHow it hurt so bad to see her cryI didn’t want to say good-byeSend her my love, memories remainSend her my love, roses never fade”

Boom. They pack a wallop.
