Sam Recommends: “Save Room” by John Legend

For a brief 6-month period in my freshman year of college, I had the “pleasure” of working as a barista at the cooler of two Starbucks in the strip mall where all of the UC Riverside students hung out.

John Legend’s Once Again had recently dropped, and it was one of the 4–5 albums we sold in the store, which meant it was one of the 4–5 albums we were allowed to play over the loud speaker. Of course, we had already learned how to hack the sound system with an auxiliary cord to play whatever we had on our iPods, but because our general manager was actually Satan incarnate, when she was there, we had to make due with music approved by corporate.

This song, which samples “Stormy” by Classics IV (another personal fave jam), was one song I never got tired of despite hearing it multiple times on a daily basis, and it has stuck with me since then.
