Sam recommends “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World

Hey Memoir Mixtapes friends. It’s been a while.

The last time you heard from us, we were working on a fiction issue.

That obviously never happened. And honestly the shame of that failure is what’s kept me away from this platform for ~2 years.

I’m sincerely sorry to everyone we let down with that. And I hope you can forgive us.

What happened there? Life happened! And it put MM on the backburner for everyone on our (former) team.

Life happening meant a global pandemic, yes. But it also meant pregnancy. Major moves. Ended relationships. New relationships. Layoffs. New jobs. In summary: a lot.

I’m finally ready to let go of the shame, face you all, ask for your forgiveness, and bring Memoir Mixtapes back. But it’s going to look a little different this time around.

Namely, I want it to be more sustainable to manage, so we can avoid another burnout- and shame-induced 2-year hiatus. That means the editorial team is just going to be me for the foreseeable future.

It also means we’re going to start slow, by relaunching our song recommendations series. There won’t be any set cadence, because that just adds more stress to my already stressful life. Instead, we’ll publish and promote new song recs on a rolling basis, as we get them, and as we have time to post them.

As you can see, it also looks a lot different in a literal sense, because the old WordPress site made me sad to look at. Don’t worry:you can find all of the old song recommendations under the “Archive” tab.

Once we get back in the swing of things, I’d love to start thinking about what Vol.12 could look like. I’ve decided a foray into fiction isn’t for us (obviously), so I’m definitely open to hearing from you all what theme you’d be excited to write a personal essay or poem about.

Thanks for reading <3

PS

You can help us get the ball rolling by writing a song rec for Memoir Mixtapes. It’ll be fun.
