Cory Recommends: “Where Did the Night Go” by Gil Scott-Heron

“Long ago the clock washed midnight away…”

This track, from his final album (2010’s “I’m New Here”) has haunted me since I first heard it and there is no way to exorcise this ghost trapped alone in a dark house, night after night.

“Time to get up again and time to start up again…”

Known for his poetry set to music (The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Whitey on the Moon) this song follows in that vein.

“Should have been asleep when I was sitting there drinking beer and trying to start another letter to you…”

I play this song on repeat, hoping to learn something else, but I know all the words by heart and in my heart. How can such a powerfully intimate experience take less than a minute and a half?

“I can’t get past ‘Dear Baby, How are you?’”
