K Recommends: “Nobody But You” by Lil’ Bob and the Lollipops

Louisiana soul croons and swoons on this sweet 1960s offering from Little Bob and the Lollipops. For me, the innocence and slow dance-ability of “Nobody But You” recalls less convoluted times. I hear the stirrings of first love and longing… all to a soundtrack that moves along so cool and so patient but thumps nervously on the inside. The lyrics bide their time just a bit like the thoughts of someone hoping to catch the interest of another without coming on too strong. I’d like to go back to that feeling and its newness. This track transports me there every single time I listen.

One of the best things I have noticed about this song (and really the whole “I Got Loaded” album) is that people who hear it for the first time often gravitate to it and want to know more. The old adage of “They don’t make ‘em like they used to” rings true but there are a lot of 50s and 60s artists who have that saccharine doo wop flavor. I think the standout with this band was their way of telling good love stories (as with this track) or drinking stories or stories about the day-to-day without too much sugar-coating. The accessible beats and rhythm paired with down-to-earth lyrics feel very human. While many popular artists of the time might have had a shtick or sang too high or low, this supremely underrated group kept the mood so wonderfully relaxed.

One fun part of this particular song is that you can hear a chirpy, metallic sound in the background. For years I thought I was imagining it when I played the CD. You can hear it on just about any format. I recently found that the sound is a squeaky bass drum pedal. The imperfection of the recording of this song makes me appreciate it even more. It’s just so real from start to finish.
