Kevin Recommends: “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder
The “disco sucks” movement has always felt problematic to me. Even as a kid, (and even before a litany of podcasts dug into its not-so-subtle racist and homophobic under(over?)tones), something else about it just didn’t sit well with me. I’d hear my mom saying “disco sucks, man,” but I always enjoyed it when I heard it. I’ve given it a lot of thought over the years, and I’ve come to think it has to do with how god damn closed-minded the movement was toward the evolution of music.
The progenitors of the “disco sucks” movement (and the racist, homophobic band wagoners) who championed the cause were getting all pissy because they felt like disco was a perversion of rock and roll. They were resentful of its sudden popularity, and in many cases, resentful of the liberation it afforded minority and fringe groups. The people who held and attended the infamous Disco Demolition Night didn’t like that something new and adventurous was sweeping the world. They wanted the same old bullshit to be the most popular thing — which is like, the least rock and roll thing I can think of.
Sure, I get it, new things are unfamiliar and, therefore, absolutely terrifying or whatever, and classic rock was pretty good. But my dudes — adapt and evolve, otherwise you’re going to become tired and boring.
I say fuck the racists and haters. Disco rules.
On that note, I implore you to feel the love today with this extended version of “I Feel Love” by Queen Donna Summer and High Synth Lord Giorgio Moroder. It’s one of the hottest disco tracks ever made.
