Seigar Recommends: “Close but not Quite” by Everything is Recorded (Richard Russell) Feat. Sampha

Seigar, the photographer, is back.

Richard Russell has just released his debut album, after decades being the man behind XL Recordings and producing people as big as Adele or Arca. This album represents the sound of 2018, with big name guests such as Sampha, (the singer in the great track I’m presenting you today), the Ibeyi sisters, Kamasi Washington, Giggs, Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Syd, and Peter Gabriel.

Sampha has an essential part in the album; his unique voice adds modernity to a collection that is full of jazz, art pop, electronic, R&B and world music. He sings soulfully the next lines that we can identify with these days:

I’m so misunderstood, I’m so misunderstoodI’m so misunderstood, I’m so misunderstoodI don’t know what to believe in

And Curtis Mayfield replies:

Of these words I’ve tried to reciteThey are close but not quiteAlmost impossible to doReciting the makings of you

This is definitely, as Richard Russell says, “the sum of its parts”. This record feels like freedom, class, spirit, passion and a journey. It’s an exercise in which strong individuals have become “a group”. Do yourself a favor and listen to this album — simply 2018!
